Why Whitman

Our goal is to prepare scholars for successful academic careers - leading researchers and teachers in various business and management disciplines.

Doctoral studies are challenging and require an inquisitive and analytical personality, as well as individual dedication and perseverance. Succeeding requires commitment to developing one's intellect and judgment, a desire to improve knowledge and understanding, and a willingness to actively engage in the development of research ideas and have them criticized through a peer-review process. Doctoral students play a significant role in their own learning and development, and therefore must be self-directed and highly motivated.

Each doctoral student admitted to the program at the Whitman School will be personally supervised and directed by one of Whitman’s nationally and internationally recognized faculty members. Under the guidance of faculty, PhD students are expected to conduct rigorous research publishable in the most esteemed business journals. They are treated as full members of their respective departments, with access to the same research resources available to our faculty.

The Whitman Difference

  • Intimate program with an emphasis on quality, with faculty highly invested in student success.

  • Flexible, personalized program of study tailored to meet student’s strengths and interests. This feature is particularly suited for self-motivated individuals who take an active hand in shaping their course of study.

  • Research focus and close mentoring by research scholars from day-one, where faculty and PhD students work together on co-authored research that leads to joint publications during and post-graduation.

  • Cross-disciplinary work as a means to differentiate our graduates; for example: Management and Entrepreneurship, Marketing and Supply-Chain Management, and Accounting and Information Systems.
